Aare Afe Babalola is the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State (ABUAD). He is a traditional chief. Aare Afe Babalola was born in Ekiti State, Nigeria on the 30th of October 1929. He is a lawyer by profession. After his university education, he worked briefly with Central Bank of Nigeria before going for a second degree in law from the University of London.
He is married to Yeye Aare Modupe Babalola with three children. In the year 2001-2008, he was the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos. During the period, he won the best Pro-Chancellor award consecutively in 2005 and 2006.
While he was Pro-Chancellor, he was not happy with the Nigerian education system. He was so unhappy to the point of doing something different about it.
Afe Babalola decided to establish his own university to set a standard for other universities to emulate. His decision gave birth to Afe Babalola University in the year 2008. “My legacy is not in the building I have, not by the money in my account, but in these children, students of my school.” –Aare Afe Babalola. Aare Afe Babalola has a 400-bed hospital that was commissioned on October 20th, 2017. The hospital partners with organizations that support its quest for international standard health care, teaching, training and research services. Some of these partners include Abbot Laboratories, Aster Hospital Group, USA Project (C.U.R.E.), Adler, England, College of Pharmacy, Howard University, USA and many more.
Afe Babalola’s Philanthropy: 1. As pro-chancellor of Unilag, he donated his salary for scholarships and renovation of the university. 2. He built a high-class administrative building for the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti in the year 2016. 3. He donated an auditorium for the Faculty of Law, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti in the year 2016. 4. He built a home for nurses at Ekiti State teaching hospital in the year 2016. 5. Afe Babalola gave 16.5 million Naira to empower over 1000 people in 2017. 6. He gave over 2 million Naira to 48 farmers at the agricultural exhibition scheme in Ekiti Ekiti State to boost food production in 2018.
